Our Little Spot in the World
Welcome to Williamson, a small town with a big heart. Here, we try to stay true to our city motto, "Cherish our past, plan our future." Indeed, the past and future meld in Williamson, with reminders of our long ago rural roots alongside newer offerings, such as The Williamson Library, Education and Arts Facility, or L.E.A.F.
The first settlement here was called Driver, named for Mr. Giles Driver who ran an inn. He later sold the inn to a Mr. Stearns, who ran the inn and a stand the town became known as, you guessed it- Stearnsville. Judge Ike Williamson farmed here and eventually purchased thousands of acres in the community. His arrival was timely, because in 1887 the little town was put on the map, as that is the year that the railroad came through.
There were two lines, one from Atlanta to Fort Valley, and the other from Atlanta to Columbus. The lines crossed right here, and the city became "Williamson" to honor the Judge, who donated most of the acreage needed for the railroad.
Now a caboose stands in the spot that once held the Williamson depot, a tribute to our ties to the past. Paved roads have replaced the dirt where citizens lined up to pay last respects as the train passed carrying President Franklin Roosevelt's body to Washington D.C. from his home in Warm Springs.
Now let's talk a bit about now. Whether you are just passing through for some good barbeque, or are ready to settle here for life, Williamson has much to offer. The mayor and city council are always hard at work to make Williamson a clean, safe and enjoyable place to live.
Visit our Memorial Park and get close to a Huey helicopter, (possibly involved in covert missions in Viet Nam!), reminding us of the brave men and women from the past, present and future of our U.S. military.
Feel like a stroll? Our Benson Hilley Park boasts a walking trail, restroom facilities and a pavilion and picnic area. A children's playground completes the picture, with plenty of old oaks for shade.
Then comes a stop at the library, or L.E.A.F. This small community library was built on the generous donations of others, and packs a wallop with services offered, including computers, free wifi and copy and fax use. Year round classes and programs abound, including our very popular Summer Reading Program, craft classes, and other goodies! Please view our City Calendar for event postings!
There's more! But we will leave that for you to discover for yourselves! We are go glad that you stopped by to see us. Welcome to Williamson! Kick off your shoes and stay awhile!
